Fence posts fail here for one of two reasons: they’re set in concrete that traps water against the base of the post, or they’re not deep enough to handle the wind that comes across the flatter ground near Goole and Scunthorpe. We set posts below the frost line with a gravel board at the base to keep timber off wet soil, which adds years to a fence’s life over the standard concrete-post-in-a-hole approach.
We fit closeboard, panel and trellis fencing, and build brick or block garden walls, including retaining walls for the sloped gardens common in parts of Sheffield and Barnsley where a level lawn isn’t an option without terracing. Retaining walls are built with proper drainage behind them so they’re not holding back both soil and water.
